Help for farmers and forest landowners
Most help is free. Call 401-934-0840 or email Sam Thibault, Land Conservation Program Manager, and we will walk you through it.
Farm, Forest & Open Space tax program
- Free farm conservation plan. NRICD currently has funding to write farm conservation plans for eligible landowners free of charge.
- Soil maps for Open Space. Your tax assessor needs soil maps for the Open Space portion. We provide them at $60/hour; most properties take 1–2 hours.
- Sign your application. Applications are signed by appointment (15–30 minutes, usually within the week). A $100 fee is due at the appointment.
Land access map
Looking for farmland? The interactive ArcGIS Online map shows potential parcels with soils and access notes. On a phone, use the list view, or call us and we will look it up with you.

Funding and technical assistance
Many farmers and forest landowners qualify for USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service programs that provide free technical assistance and funding for conservation practices. NRICD staff help you apply and write your conservation plan.
